South Charleston Public Library – About Us
The South Charleston Public Library (SCPL) is an independent, municipal library which relies on support by the City of South Charleston, the State of West Virginia, local levies, private contributions, sales from The Corner Bookstore, and funds received through daily operations.
Located near City Hall at Fourth Avenue and D Street, SCPL serves the citizens of South Charleston and neighboring communities. In 1943, a group of community members organized donated books in the South Charleston Recreation Building to function as a public library. In 1963, the Library Advisory Board was formed, and funds were secured from the City of South Charleston and interested individuals to begin planning an official city library. An ordinance and by-laws were adopted in 1967 by the City of South Charleston-appointed Board of Directors, who would provide oversight of what we know today as SCPL. The current building opened in 1969, with several renovations and expansions completed over the years.
The Board of Directors and management team are dedicated to the provision of curated library and information materials and resources, as well as individualized service for those who choose SCPL. Our staff members work diligently to offer quality service to all.
SCPL library cards are available at no charge, and over 70% of South Charleston residents are cardholders. More than 500 patrons visit the library building each day. The library maintains a robust collection of print and electronic resources and materials, and provides technology access including computers, wireless internet, and printers. A number of other services are available including copiers, fax machine, notary service, and passport acceptance/assistance.
Book and media drops are available outside the main entrance on Fourth Avenue and behind the library, where a Drive Up service window is also available.

SCPL’s Youth Services offers resources and programming for young people (birth to 18 years) with the goal of promoting literacy, while simultaneously developing a lifelong love of reading and learning. Our team of experienced professionals – led by a degreed professional librarian with a background in education – is dedicated to supporting the information needs of young people and families. We truly want to make a difference for our community, one young reader at a time.
Adult programs include special interest performances such as murder mystery nights; cultural programs about famous people, regional groups, and organizations; and events focused on local authors. Efforts are made to provide copies of most titles on the current best-seller lists as well as award-winning movies and documentaries for our patrons to borrow.
As a good steward of the environment and participant in the City’s recycling efforts, SCPL gladly accepts donations of new and used books, textbooks, videos, and music. A dedicated group of volunteers share their time and expertise to process donations and manage the in-house and online bookstore, The Corner Bookstore. Items sold generate funds which are returned to the library for the purchase of new materials.
SCPL facilities are ADA accessible with free, convenient parking available. Reasonable accommodations and special services are available upon request.
