South Charleston Public Library
The South Charleston Public Library (SCPL) is an independent, municipal library which relies solely on support by the City of South Charleston, the State of West Virginia, private contributions, and funds received through daily operations.
Located near City Hall at Fourth Avenue and D Street, SCPL has served the citizens of South Charleston since 1943. Launched with donated books organized by a group of engaged community leaders, the library currently maintains a robust collection of print and electronic resources and materials, and provides technology access including computers, wireless internet, and printers. The library also has meeting rooms used by area nonprofits and groups.
SCPL library cards are available to area residents at no charge, and over 70% of South Charleston residents are cardholders. More than 500 patrons visit the library each day to borrow books and other resources. Book and media drops are available outside the main entrance on Fourth Avenue and on the street behind the library, where a drive up service window is also available.
SCPL cardholders are encouraged to utilize the library and access services including:
90,000+ items to borrow/access
Online ebooks and audiobooks
Fishing Pole Lending Library
WV History and Reference Room
Community Meeting Rooms
The Youth Services department and summer library programs are led by professional librarians and staff members who have significant experience working with libraries and library users under the age of 18. SCPL takes pride in serving second and third generations of children and teens whose parents and grandparents enjoyed SCPL as children.
Adult programs include special interest performances such as murder mystery nights; cultural programs about famous people, regional groups, and organizations; and events focused on local authors. Efforts are made to procure copies of most titles on the current best-seller lists as well as award-winning movies and documentaries.
As a good steward of the environment and participant in the City’s recycling efforts, SCPL gladly accepts donations of new and used books, textbooks, videos, and music. A dedicated group of volunteers share their time and expertise to process donations and manage the in-house and online bookstore, The Corner Bookstore. Items sold generate funds which are returned to the library for the purchase of new materials.
SCPL facilities are ADA accessible and free, convenient parking is available. Reasonable accommodations and special services may be made available upon request.
